The Premier League is widely regarded as the greatest professional football league in the world. While this may not always be strictly true in terms of quality, it certainly is in terms of affluence, excitement and unpredictability. There have been some truly outstanding Premier League teams over its 28-year life span, and many of these are basked in glory…
We all remember the greatest winning teams and their winning stories: Arsenal 2003/04, Manchester City 2011/12 and Leicester 2015/16, to name but a few. But, by focusing solely on the winners of the prestigious title, we often forget the greatness of some teams that narrowly missed out, teams which fell at the final hurdle. After all, who remembers second place?

It is rare that a team will come forward and present itself as one of the best. It is even rarer that they don’t mark their greatness by ending the season as champions. Here, at 3-At-The-Back, we intend to share some of these such teams – our favourites. Therefore, we are launching a series of posts dedicated to remembering these brilliant sides that sadly missed out on Premier League glory, and have subsequently been forgotten by the footballing community.
Great players, great managers, great seasons. All with one thing in common…no Premier League trophy in May. What made their seasons good? What were the highlights and the low points? And, ultimately, why did the domestic silverware evade them?
If we cast our minds back, we all know certain teams will come to mind – the different eras of the world’s greatest league have gifted us with some magnificent teams! Over the coming weeks, we will pay homage to some of the Premier League’s greatest losers, and reel off some iconic moments within these teams’ respective seasons. From mind games to mistakes and everything in between, stick with 3-At-The-Back as we record…
